5 Ways to Help Your Feet Shop Longer

The holiday season is upon us and that means you’ll most likely be putting in extra hours at the mall doing your shopping--not to mention waiting on line at the post office to mail gifts and running here and there as you check items off your holiday to-do list. At Pasco-Hernando Foot & Ankle, we know that patients who don’t take the proper precautions are likely to end up in our Spring Hill (352 683-5799) or Hudson (727-868-2128) office complaining of foot pain. Below are 5 tips to help your feet weather this busy season.

  1. Start with shoes that fit. Studies show that up to 90% of people are walking around with shoes that are too small for their feet. Be sure the pair you pick for days when you will be on your feet for many hours has a roomy toe box and a heel counter that is snug but not tight.

  2. Ditch the high heels. Holiday shopping is all about function, not fashion! Limit heel height to no more than 2 inches and flats or sneakers are best.

  3. Pack some moleskin. A small piece of moleskin applied to a spot on your foot that is starting to feel sore can prevent a blister from forming which could bring your day to a screeching halt.

  4. Drink plenty of water throughout the day. This will help flush excess fluid from your body and help you avoid painful swelling in your feet and ankles.

  5. Take breaks. Find a place to sit down every few hours during your shopping day and put your feet up if possible.

If you notice pain or discomfort in your feet or ankles that doesn’t subside after resting your feet, contact us. Our podiatrists, Dr. Lawrence J. Kales and Dr. Alexis Kreplick, will want to examine your feet and determine what’s causing your pain so that the proper treatment can be prescribed.
