You started out with high hopes and lots of enthusiasm—2019 was going to be the year you finally got off the couch and into great shape. We’re barely out of January, and your fitness resolution is in free fall. At Pasco-Hernando Foot & Ankle we know that this is a common scenario. It’s not too late to rescue your resolution, however. Below are some common fitness derailers and ways to get back on track.

Exercise is a pain in the foot (or ankle). One reason we know about exercise plan setbacks is often a new fitness routine brings patients into our Spring Hill (352 683-5799) or Hudson (727-868-2128) office due to podiatric discomfort. If your new program is hurting your feet or ankles, it’s important not to wait to get it checked out by our podiatrist, Dr. Lawrence J. Kales. Pain is a sign that something is wrong, and the foot doctor will examine your feet and get to the root of the problem. If you have a chronic foot issue, such as a hammertoe or heel spurs, the podiatrist can recommend activities or accommodations, such as an orthotic, that can make exercise more comfortable.

You need different shoes. The most important piece of equipment for just about any sport or exercise program is your footwear. Shoes that don’t fit properly can pinch your toes, cause blisters, heel pain or other uncomfortable sensations that can cause you to stop an exercise program in its tracks. It’s important to get shoes that are designed for the specific activity you are doing and also to get them professionally fitted.

Some routines are just too much! If the fitness plan you chose is too vigorous for your current level of physical fitness it may leave you so exhausted or sore that you don’t want to continue. It’s important to pick an activity that allows you to start at a level commensurate with your current condition and gradually build up your stamina and strength. Plans that take you from zero to sixty usually result in overuse injuries like Achilles tendonitis and shin splints.

You need a friend. Exercise can be more fun and more effective with a buddy. Working out or doing an activity like walking or running with a friend makes exercising a social activity and helps you be more accountable when you feel like giving up.

Don’t give up! Exercise has many benefits for your feet and the rest of your body. Let us help you if your plan is causing you pain. Contact us today for an appointment.
