At Pasco Hernando Foot & Ankle we want our patients to live the active lives they love, free from foot and ankle pain. In April, we celebrate Foot Health Awareness Month—the perfect opportunity to share some information on how to take better care of your feet.

Don’t Live with Foot Pain

Foot pain is not normal! No matter what your age, you shouldn’t accept podiatric discomfort. Hurting feet are trying to tell you something. Make an appointment at our Spring Hill (352 683-5799) or Hudson (727-868-2128) office and find out what’s causing the pain. Our podiatrist, Dr. Lawrence J. Kales, will examine your feet and ankles and order any necessary tests to diagnose your discomfort. Once the source of your foot pain is known, a treatment plan can be created to help alleviate your symptoms.

Get into Good Foot Care Habits

There are several simple ways you can be proactive in maintaining good foot health, including:

  • Clean your feet every day.

  • Inspect your feet regularly and report any unusual changes in appearance or sensation to the foot doctor promptly.

  • Keep feet covered, especially in public places to prevent fungal infections.

  • ·Avoid sharing socks, shoes, nail clippers and any other items that come in contact with another person’s feet.

Throw Away Worn Out Shoes

Your footwear has a major impact on the condition of your feet. Shoes that are stretched out, have loose stitching or worn-down arch support can lead to foot pain and injuries. It’s also a good idea to have your foot measured professionally when buying new shoes as your size can increase as you age. Choose styles with roomy toe boxes and low heels for maximum comfort and to avoid bunions, hammertoes and other deformities.

Adopt a Healthier Lifestyle

Improving your overall health will have a positive effect on your feet. Not smoking will increase circulation. Maintaining an appropriate weight or shedding pounds if you are overweight will reduce the strain on your feet and help prevent foot disorders. Regular exercise keeps your feet flexible and improves range of motion and circulation.
