Big Toes Can Cause Big Problems

At Pasco-Hernando Foot & Ankle Care, we know your big toe might not be the most significant thing on your mind right now. However, you may not realize your big toe enables you to do many activities you probably take for granted—including ones as basic as standing and walking. For this reason, it’s important to pay attention to nagging symptoms that may signal the onset of arthritis in this important joint.

Signs of Trouble

Early symptoms of arthritis in the toe may be subtle. At first, you might just notice some soreness or stiffness in the big toe, particularly when it’s cold or damp out. You might see some swelling or inflammation around the base of the toe, and some activities like bending down or running may seem uncomfortable. It is the time to make an appointment at our Hudson office by calling 727-868-2128 or 352-683-5799 so our podiatrist, Dr. Lawrence J. Kales, can take a look at your toe and determine if arthritis is present. During the initial stages of the disease, the toe is still flexible. The longer you delay seeking treatment, the more likely the toe will become rigid and unable to bend. You may also experience other symptoms, such as:

  • Development of growths known as bone spurs

  • Pain that is more constant, even when you are at rest

  • Difficulty wearing shoes

  • Pain in the back, hip, or knees due to changes in your gait

Treatment Choices

Once the podiatrist examines your toe and foot and possibly orders x-rays as well, he will be able to determine the severity of your arthritis. This, combined with your age and activity level, will be factored in creating a personalized treatment plan.

There are several options for controlling pain and slowing the progression of arthritis if caught early. These include NSAIDs (like ibuprofen), corticosteroid injections, physical therapy, and orthotics. In some cases, particularly if the arthritis is in the late stage, surgery may be the only or best option.
