As battles rage on in our state about just what the new school year will look like, we at Pasco-Hernando Foot & Ankle know one thing that shouldn’t change is the age-old ritual of buying children new shoes for the new school year. Regardless of whether children will be in classrooms or learning from home, chances are their feet have grown over the summer and it’s time to assess shoe needs. Quality shoes that fit properly are essential for the health of your child’s feet. Below are some shoe shopping tips for families:

  • Evaluate current podiatric conditions. If your child has a chronic foot problem like overpronation or they sustain an injury over the summer, such as a sprained ankle, it’s important you contact our Hudson office (727-868-2128 or 352 683-5799) for an appointment. Our podiatrist, Dr. Lawrence J. Kales, will examine your child’s feet and may have recommendations regarding shoe features that will best accommodate any foot or ankle conditions they have.

  • Get feet professionally measured. The salesperson should measure both of your child’s feet with them standing up. If you are told your child’s feet are two different sizes, don’t be alarmed! It’s fairly common. Just make sure the shoes you buy are comfortable on the larger foot. There should also be a thumb’s width distance between the end of the big toe and the tip of the shoe to allow for growth.

  • Bring the right socks. It’s a good idea to try on shoes with the same type of socks you plan to wear them with to ensure the best fit.

  • Shop at the end of the day. That’s when feet are at their largest.

  • Try on both shoes. Although buying new shoes may not be your child’s most exciting activity, it’s important they take the time to try on both shoes and walk around long enough to determine they are comfortable.

  • Buy appropriate shoes for your child’s activities. A basic pair of sneakers may be fine for daily use, but if your child is a dedicated athlete, it’s necessary to have shoes specifically designed for their sport.
