Keeping Feet Attractive and Healthy

For our “snowbirds” flying back to warm and sunny Florida as well as our year-round patients, the temperate climate here means you can wear open-toed shoes and sandals practically year-round. At Pasco-Hernando Foot & Ankle, we know that also means your feet are on display, and it’s challenging to feel comfortable if you’re dealing with an unsightly foot problem. Below are three common disorders patients bring to us and how to prevent them.

Deformities

Hammertoes, bunions, claw toes, and Haglund’s deformity (or pump bump) are all examples of common deformities in the feet. While these conditions often have a genetic component that leads to a biomechanical issue with your feet, your shoe choice can go a long way to prevent or exacerbate the problem. Look for styles that don’t squeeze your toes or put pressure on the back of your heel. Materials that are soft and flexible are best. Even though deformities can be progressive, early detection and treatment can greatly slow the process and possibly even prevent the need for surgery. For this reason, it’s essential to alert our podiatrist, Dr. Lawrence J. Kales, of any changes in the appearance of your feet.

Toenail Fungus

This fungal infection can lead to nails turning a brownish yellow color and getting very thick and crumbly on the edges. While tempting, it’s best not to try to cover them with nail polish. Though fungal infections can take a long time to heal, we do have treatments that can help. Of course, the best treatment is prevention. Fungal infections spread by direct contact, so avoid walking barefoot around the pool or in other public places like beach restrooms or gym locker rooms. Keeping feet dry can also help. If your feet tend to perspire heavily, try an antifungal foot powder each morning.

Ingrown Toenails

When a nail becomes ingrown, it causes the toe to become inflamed, red, and swollen. Once the nail punctures the skin, there may also be pus present which can indicate an infection. This condition is not only unsightly but also very painful. Improper nail trimming is the number one cause. Cut nails straight across with no rounded edges and not too short. Diabetic patients may want to ask for assistance with nail care at our Hudson office.
