Back to school time for children and grandchildren is here for many of our Nature Coast patients at Pasco-Hernando Foot & Ankle, and we thought it would be a good time to share some fascinating facts about feet. See how many of these you knew!

  • The skin on the soles of your feet is thicker than anywhere else on your body.

  • Toenails grow more slowly than fingernails. It takes 12-18 months to regrow a new toenail completely.

  • Nearly a quarter of all the bones in your body reside in your feet. In fact, each foot has 26 bones and 33 joints, 19 muscles, 10 tendons, and 107 ligaments.

  • Your feet can produce up to half a pint of perspiration a day from their 250,000 sweat glands.

  • Which is more tiring—walking or standing? Standing, because you use only a few muscles to hold up your body weight. When walking, the weight distributes over more muscles.

  • There are 8,000 nerves in your feet—more per square centimeter than any other part of your body,

  • The average person walks approximately 110,000 miles. That’s the equivalent of circling the globe about four times!

  • Estimates are 80% of people will have a foot disorder at some point in their life.

  • Women are four times more likely than men to have foot problems. It may be related to their footwear or the fact that, on average, they walk more daily than men.

  • An ankle sprain is the most common foot problem, surpassing even minor complaints like blisters and athlete’s foot.

It kind of makes you appreciate your feet more than ever, right?
