Minimally Invasive Surgery Can Fix Many Foot Problems

At Pasco Hernando Foot & Ankle, our primary goal is to help our patients take care of their feet to enjoy an active life. One problem with traditional podiatric surgery is that it usually involves a prolonged recovery period where that patient often has to avoid being on their feet for an extended period. We are pleased to offer minimally invasive foot surgery, which has dramatically reduced the amount of time a patient is disabled. This surgical technique can be used to permanently correct many common podiatric problems, such as:

How Does it Work?

Minimally invasive surgery uses a small instrument—about the size of a pen point. It means incisions will be tiny--only about 1/8-1/4 of an inch long. Our podiatrist, Dr. Lawrence J. Kales, will be able to clearly visualize the area in need of repair using a fluoroscope (similar to the idea of an arthroscope used in knee surgery). He can then permanently reposition and fix misaligned bones and eliminate growths and spurs. Usually, one or two stitches are all it takes to close the incision.

Multiple Benefits

This low-impact surgery can be performed in our Hudson office under local anesthesia—no IV sedation required. The postoperative recovery usually only involves one day off your feet. Depending on your occupation this may mean little or no time off from work. There are no casts or pins to deal with and many patients are able to go back to wearing their own shoes in as little as one to three days. Being able to resume normal activities sooner means less muscle atrophy and overall trauma to the body.
