Orthotics are inserts for your shoes that can greatly improve foot function and relieve pain. At Pasco-Hernando Foot & Ankle, many of the foot problems we treat are due to faulty biomechanics. If your bones are not properly aligned and your foot is not positioned correctly, it can cause changes in your feet when you stand, walk or run that can alter your gait and cause podiatric problems.

Custom orthotics can be used to complement treatment for many foot and ankle conditions, including:

●        Plantar fasciitis

●        Heel spurs

●        Frequent ankle sprains

●        Hammertoes

●        Flat feet

●        Bunions

●        Corns and calluses

●        Diabetic foot pain

New technologies allow the podiatrist to make precise adjustments and address a wide range of needs such as:

●        Shock absorption

●        Pressure reduction

●        Increased balance

Over the Counter vs. Custom Orthotics

Think of orthotics as you would eyeglasses. You can buy magnifying glasses that can help in a general way with a minor problem with your vision, but to get truly correct vision you need prescription eyeglasses based on the eye doctor’s exam. For your feet, our podiatrists, Dr. Lawrence J. Kales and Dr. Alexis Kreplick, can make a digital scan to create a custom molded orthotic designed just for you.

Orthotics should be worn only after consulting your podiatrist. The foot doctor will be able to tell you if a general type orthotic would help with your condition. Wearing an over-the-counter orthotic that is too hard, too rigid or inappropriate for your foot condition can actually cause more harm to your feet and ankles.

It’s best not to guess when it comes to orthotic inserts for your feet. If you have a condition that you think would improve with the use of a custom orthotic device, contact our Spring Hill (352-683-5799) or Hudson (727-868-2128) office in the nature coast of Florida for an appointment.
