At Pasco-Hernando Foot & Ankle, we know that our Pasco and Hernando County patients have probably been doing a lot of shopping for special people on their holiday gift lists. How about a little something for your feet? These amazing parts of your body enable you to do so much, and they can continue to serve you well for many years with the proper care. Did you know that the single biggest way to be proactive in the care of your feet is to wear well-made properly fitted shoes? Why not take yourself on a shopping trip for a new pair. Below are some tips on ensuring you get the right fit for your foot.

  • First stop, our Spring Hill (352 683-5799) or Hudson (727-868-2128) office to get a checkup. Our podiatrist, Dr. Lawrence J. Kales, will examine your feet and monitor the progression of any chronic disorders such as bunions or plantar fasciitis. The foot doctor can make recommendations for shoe styles that will best accommodate any conditions you have. In some cases, a custom orthotic may be prescribed and you should make sure that it fits into any shoes you buy.

  • Shop at a reputable shoe store and get both of your feet measured professionally. Shoe size can change as you age. It’s also not uncommon to have one foot slightly bigger than the other. Always buy the right size to fit the larger foot.

  • Schedule your shopping trip for late in the day. Your feet are at their largest and most swollen after you’ve been walking around on them all day.

  • Wear the type of socks you would typically wear with the shoes you are purchasing. This will ensure a more accurate fit.

  • Try on both shoes and take your time walking around the store to make sure they feel comfortable. There should be space to wiggle your toes and the heel counter should feel snug but not tight. There is no such thing as a “breaking in” period. Shoes need to not pinch or rub anywhere. Your feet should feel good walking out the door.
