Protect Yourself Against Ankle Sprains

At Pasco-Hernando Foot & Ankle, our primary goal is helping our Nature Coast patients continue to enjoy active lifestyles by promoting good foot and ankle health. When it comes to your ankles that means avoiding sprains. An ankle-twisting injury occurs when the ligaments get overstretched. Symptoms of a sprained ankle include swelling, pain or soreness, bruising, and stiffness. Bearing weight on the ankle may be difficult. Without prompt treatment and a complete course of rehabilitation, the ligaments will not regain their former strength. This can make future sprains more likely and lead to chronically weak and painful ankles. Below are some steps you can take to prevent sprains from occurring:

  • Avoid high heels and heels that are very thin or spiky. These naturally cause you to be unstable on your feet and the least change in elevation, or stepping on a pebble or other small object can cause your ankle to easily give way.

  • Take precautions when playing sports. Be sure the field or court where you play is well maintained with no uneven surfaces or divots. Wear the appropriate shoes for the activity you are doing and be sure to warm up and stretch before and after exercise.

  • Don’t carry too many packages at once. If what you have in your hands prevents you from seeing the ground in front of you, you’re setting yourself up for a slip or fall. Make multiple trips so you can see where you are going.

  • Choose shoes with non-slip treads.

  • Toss shoes when they are worn out. Shoes that are stretched out or have holes or rips in the toes increase the risk of injury.

  • If you have foot pain, make an appointment at our Spring Hill (352 683-5799) or Hudson (727-868-2128) office and get it evaluated by our podiatrist, Dr. Lawrence J. Kales. When your feet hurt it can cause you to alter the way you walk and throw off your balance. Don’t put off seeking treatment. Contact us today.
