Don’t Hesitate to Make the Call

At Pasco-Hernando Foot & Ankle, we often hear that patients weren’t sure if they should contact our Spring Hill (352 683-5799) or Hudson (727-868-2128) office to get symptoms they were experiencing evaluated. We would always rather that you err on the side of caution and come in, instead of waiting it out and risking a foot or ankle condition getting worse. If you’re on the fence, however, below are some signs that it’s time to call the podiatrist.

It Hurts

Foot pain is always a sign that something is wrong. Of course, if you’ve just started a new exercise routine or spent a long day going from store to store at the mall, you may know why your feet hurt and that you need to give them a rest to get relief. If the source of the pain is less obvious, ask yourself:

  • Has the pain come on suddenly?

  • Is the pain getting steadily worse in intensity or the length of time that it lasts?

  • Does the pain come and go—particularly after a specific activity or at a particular time of the day?

  • Did I fall or sustain an injury recently?

It’s Swollen

Swelling can be a sign of a sprain or fracture. If you have recently twisted your ankle, fallen or had an injury on the sports field or court, it’s time for a visit to the podiatrist. Even if you are not experiencing pain, swelling may indicate that a sprain or even a fracture may have occurred.

It’s Red and Hot

These are symptoms to take seriously and act on immediately as they may signal an infection. Redness surrounding a cut, wound or red streaks radiating out from an injury, particularly if the skin in that area feels warm are cause for concern. Other symptoms that may point to infection include pus or other discharge from a wound and a fever.

It Just Doesn’t Look Right

If you’re in the habit of examining your feet regularly, it will be easy to spot changes that may be the first symptoms of a new foot problem.
