Be Good to Your Feet this Holiday Season

It’s the Ho, Ho, Holidays.  At Pasco-Hernando Foot & Ankle, we know even if the celebrations are a little smaller this year, our Nature Coast patients will still be spending extra time on their feet, creating a season that’s merry and bright for family and friends. Here are some ways to take care of your feet and ensure you can enjoy the celebrations pain-free.

  • Start with Good Shoes. One of the very best ways to take care of your feet throughout the year is by wearing shoes that are well made and fit correctly. Adequate arch support will help you avoid heel pain. A cushioned insole will add comfort and a no-grip tread is essential for preventing slip and fall injuries. Toss shoes when they are worn.  Even ones that have always been comfortable can become hazardous once they are stretched out or have holes or loose stitching.

  • Plan Breaks into Your Day. Pacing yourself is critical for keeping up stamina and avoiding aching feet. It’s best to avoid staying in one position for an extended period. Shopping online? Get up and walk around for 5-10 minutes every hour. Set a timer if you need reminding. Out shopping for a holiday meal? Be sure to rest after you unpack the groceries and elevate your feet if possible.

  • Walk Hands-Free. Don’t try to carry too many packages at once. It will obscure your view and throw you off balance, making it easy to trip and fall. Use a shoulder bag that allows you to use your hands for balance and holding onto railings.

  • Don’t Ignore Foot Discomfort. If your feet start to hurt, stop what you’re doing and rest. If that doesn’t cause the pain to subside, contact our Hudson office by calling 727-868-2128 or 352-683-5799 for an appointment to see our podiatrist, Dr. Lawrence J. Kales, and find out what the problem is.

Be good to your feet this holiday season, and they’ll return the favor by enabling you to do all you wish during this special time of the year.
