At Pasco-Hernando Foot & Ankle, we’re committed to staying on top of new developments in the field of podiatry and offering our Nature Coast patients the latest cutting-edge treatments and technology for foot disorders. It’s important to note, however, that there’s much that’s tried and true when it comes to being proactive in the care of your feet and ankles. Below are some simple ways to prevent foot pain, injury, infection and common podiatric problems.

  • Stay dry. Fungi love moist places. One way to prevent athlete’s foot and other fungal infections is by keeping your feet dry. Towel dry your feet completely after showering and before putting on your socks. Pay attention to the spaces between your toes—a common starting place for athlete’s foot. If you tend to sweat excessively, keep a spare pair of socks with you and change when you notice your feet feel damp. Apply a talcum or anti-fungal powder to feet each morning.

  • Keep your feet covered. In public places like the gym, nail salon and community pool (places that tend to see a lot of barefoot traffic) wearing shoes will safeguard them from encountering viruses, fungi and bacteria that can cause warts and infections. Outdoors and even at home, wearing shoes can protect your feet from cuts and puncture wounds.

  • Make good shoe choices. No, we’re not talking about those spiky designer heels—in fact, it’s best for your feet to keep heel height to two inches or less. Buy quality shoes that have a roomy toe box, a supportive arch, cushioned insole and fit properly. Get your feet professionally measured and take your time trying on both shoes. Forget a “breaking in” period—shoes should be comfortable from the moment you buy them.

  • Don’t ignore foot or ankle pain. It’s your body’s way of telling you there’s a problem. Make an appointment at our Spring Hill (352 683-5799) or Hudson (727-868-2128) office promptly. Our podiatrist, Dr. Lawrence J. Kales, will find the source of your discomfort and have you back on your feet in no time.
