May is Older Americans Month and at Pasco-Hernando Foot & Ankle we are pleased to recognize and serve our senior patients. Today’s seniors live longer, healthier, more active lives, and we know the health of your feet plays a significant role in enabling you to do all you love to do. Below are some tips for keeping senior feet healthy.

  • Consistent Foot Hygiene—don’t be haphazard about primary foot care. Stick with a simple daily routine that includes washing feet with soap and water, dusting with foot powder before putting on a pair of clean socks, and then applying a rich moisturizer at bedtime.

  • Keep Feet Covered—walking barefoot is risky, even around the house. Sharp objects can cause a cut or puncture wound, and stubbing a toe is more likely if you are not wearing shoes. Keeping feet covered in public places like the pool or gym will reduce your risk of fungal infections transmitted by direct contact.

  • Eat a Nutritious Diet—an eating plan containing lots of fruits and vegetables, lean protein, fiber, and whole grains with minimal amounts of fats and sugars will help ensure you get all the vitamins and minerals you need, including ones that reduce inflammation. It will also help you maintain a healthy weight, which reduces strain on your feet.

  • Fall-Proof Your Home—one of the most significant risks to the health of seniors is falling. Install extra safety features in your home, such as grab bars in the bathroom, stair rails on both sides of a staircase, and additional lighting in hallways. Remove throw rugs, stacks of magazines and clutter, and electrical cords that may pose a tripping hazard.

  • Stay Active! The old adage, “move it or lose it,” is true. Regular exercise will provide flexibility and also improve circulation—a key component in avoiding many health issues that negatively affect your feet.

  • Don’t Ignore Foot Pain—if your feet or ankles hurt or you notice any unusual symptoms or changes, it’s best to consult our podiatrist, Dr. Lawrence J. Kales, promptly so any podiatric problems can be diagnosed and treated before they get in the way of your active life. Contact our Hudson office (727-868-2128 or 352-683-5799) for an appointment.
