Is There a Summer Vacation in Your Future?

At Pasco-Hernando Foot & Ankle, we know many of our patients postponed vacations last year due to the coronavirus pandemic. As virus rates continue to decline and restrictions lifted across the country, hopefully, you’ll be taking a vacation this summer. Whether you’re off to see family and friends or take in some new sights, we’d like to offer some tips to help ensure your feet don’t give you any trouble while you’re away.

Wear good travel-day shoes. Whatever mode of transportation you plan to take, departure day is always hectic and active. Choose a tried-and-true comfortable pair of shoes you know will not leave your feet hurting. Closed athletic shoes or sneakers that lace is your best bet.

Keep the blood flowing. If you’re going to be on an airplane for a few hours, consider compression socks. If you’re traveling by car or train, be sure to get up every hour or so to walk around and stretch. It will help with circulation and prevent stiffness.

Pack your orthotic. If our podiatrist, Dr. Lawrence J. Kales, has prescribed a custom orthotic, be sure to wear or bring it with you. Use it as directed to help your feet stay pain-free.

Slip flip-flops into your bag. While this shoe style is not good to wear for several hours due to its lack of arch support and general protection, flip-flops are the right choice to wear around a pool or at the beach: fungal infections and warts spread by direct contact. Keeping your feet covered will prevent you from bringing back an unwanted memento from your vacation.

Pack a podiatric care kit. It needn’t take up much space in your luggage, but a small bag with moleskin to prevent blisters, foot powder, antibiotic ointment, bandages, nail clippers, and an emery board may help save the day.

If you do sustain a podiatric injury while you’re away, seek treatment locally and then follow up with an appointment at our Hudson office (727-868-2128 or 352-683-5799) when you return.

Wishing you safe and happy travels!
